Field Facilities

The Barrow Arctic Science Consortium (BASC) provides logistics for the AEL's fieldwork at Barrow and Atqasuk. BASC is a community-based organization dedicated to the encouragement of research and educational activities pertaining to Alaska's North Slope, the adjacent portions of the Arctic Ocean, and in Chukotka, Russia. BASC also facilitates the exchange of knowledge between scientific researchers and the people of the Alaskan North Slope. A cooperative agreement between BASC and the National Science Foundation's Office of Polar Programs provides funding for BASC's activities.

In Barrow we stay at the NARL Hotel close to our laboratory, which is located in the same building as Ilisagvik College, BASC and the North Slope Wildlife Division. The laboratory has email, phone, and fax access and serves as a place for the team to meet, prepare for fieldwork, process samples, and enter data.

In Atqasuk, BASC rents a house for us to stay in. The house has most modern amenities including kitchen, bathroom, email, fax, phone, and satellite television. There is also a laboratory that houses our research equipment and also a snow machine, sled, two four-wheelers and a trailer.
