Soil Carbon Dynamics
research theme

Soil Organic Carbon is a major source of biosphere carbon. It is essential for productivity and sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems. Soil carbon sequestration in agro-ecosystems is being widely promoted as a means of reducing atmospheric CO2. SOCRATES (developed by Peter Grace) is a simple process-based model which accurately predicts changes in soil organic carbon in response to climate, land use and management. SOCRATES has been linked to MASIF and soil organic carbon levels for Pre-Settlement, Current and Future land use and climate situations can be displayed for counties across the Mid-Western USA
