The National Parks in the United States are experiencing continual perturbation from an array of disturbances including increased intensity of recreational use, threats due to natural causes including fire, wind storms and floods, increased resource extraction, and increased sound pollution, potentially resulting in the disturbance of natural behavior of organisms in the area. A National Parks Service funded project, undertaken by Dr. Bernie Krause with collaboration by CEVL, will develop a methodology to investigate the dimensions of natural and human induced sounds (www.wildsanctuary.com). Findings from this study will be used to develop a protocol to characterize and eventually protect natural soundscapes in National Parks. The initial field investigation will begin in Fall 2001 to characterize sound in four habitats characteristic of Kings Canyon and Sequoia national Parks. The National Parks Service supports this project.
