| Since 1994, the CEVL has collaborated with the U.S. Forest Service on the National Slow-the-Spread (STS) of the gypsy moth program. This program covers the 1,200-mile gypsy moth frontier from North Carolina through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The goal is to use novel integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in order to reduce the rate of gypsy moth spread into non-infested areas. An expected outcome is to decrease the rate of invasion from 15,600 square miles to 6,000 square miles per year. This should save annually $22 million in damage and management costs. As part of this project, the CEVL conducts the database mangement , mapping and anlysis for four states (MI, WI, IL, IN). In CEVL we have developed two web-based applications. One is a data "portal" to facilitate real-time access to the STS projects distributed relational database. The other is an ERSI's ArcIMS(TM) map server application to access spatial information related to the project (mapserver.cevl.msu.edu). |
