In
CEVL we are documenting, modeling and forecasting Michigan's changing land
use and land cover. This is to better understand the influence of changing
land use patterns and subsequent fragmentation of the landscape on Michigan'
land-based industries. These include agriculture, forestry, mining, and
recreation and tourism. To accomplish this we have used a base of 1980 land
use and land cover. Using a Michigan Tipping Point
Model, we can project future land use patterns to 2040. Then, we will
conduct spatial statistical analysis on geographic layers of each of Michigan's
Counties for several periods (1980, 1995, 2020, 2040) to characterize changes
in fragmentation for the major land use types in the state (built, agriculture,
forest, other vegetation, wetlands, lakes and barren lands). Collaborating
economists will then assess the potential impacts on each of the land-based
industries, based on these spatial projections and fragmentation statistics.
